Phonemic awareness is part of the general concept of what is known as phonological awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize and segment words into their constituent individual sounds (phonemes) making them. A phoneme in linguistics is the smallest meaningful sound unit. For instance, the word  ‘hat’ is composed of three different phonemes: /h/, /æ/, and /t/. Phonemic awareness is an important skill kids get to learn at an early age.
